Great Britain won two gold medals at the World Track Championships with Katie Archibald and Maddie Leach winning the women’s Madison before Anna Morris defended her individual title.

Archibald, 31, and Leach, 22, produced a dominant performance to win by six points over France’s Victoire Berto and Marion Bourras, while Italy’s Chiara Consoni and Vittoria Gozzini took bronze with 20 points after a crash ended the Netherlands’ challenge.

“The track was going really fast this week and I was really excited about this race,” said two-time Olympic champion Archibald.

“The only thing I was afraid of was how much pain I would feel. Everything else was just excitement and opportunity, so I was happy to welcome the pain and the jersey home.”

“There are nine years between us. Maddie was 13 when Madison’s first women’s title was contested.

“I’ve grown up with this event as a reality that wasn’t always the case, and it’s great to be around someone on that journey.”

Morris, who won individual pursuit gold at last year’s world championships in Denmark, beat Great Britain His teammate Josie Knight was 2.317 seconds clear in a comfortable final showing in Santiago, Chile.

Knight (28 years old) was the fastest qualifier for a large part of the session until the final qualifying race when Morris held an all-British final.

“It’s a new experience to warm up with the person you’re going to be competing against,” Morris said.

“We’ve both trained hard for this, so it was nice to be able to go out and leave everything on track, and if either of them wins we’ll be really happy for each other.”

Knight, Morris and Leech all added to their bronze earned in the team pursuit.

In the men’s sprint quarterfinals, Matt Richardson ran a strong qualifying time of 9.210 seconds to be top seed and set up a semi-final with Australia’s Lee Hoffman.
