Exeter Chiefs produced a dominating first-half display as they kicked off their Women’s Super League rugby season with a 24-12 win over Trailfinders.
Exeter started brightly with Leif McGovern opening the scoring after 13 minutes before Hope Rogers collected and crossed a loose ball six minutes later, which McGovern converted.
An excellent quick attacking move saw Maisie Allen send a pass to Gabriella Negrelli wide who made her side’s third try, with McGovern adding the extras to make it 19-0 at half-time.
McGovern was involved again as her side made it 24-0 in the 49th minute, setting the ball to England’s Claudia Moloney-MacDonald wide of the goal with a looping pass.
While the Trailfinders looked completely out of contention, Kate Zachary gave the hosts hope when she spotted a gap and dribbled over on goal in the 54th minute, after Meg Jones converted.
However, a positive second-half performance saw them pick up just five more points, as Georgia Ponsonby fired into a crowded area wide to reduce the deficit.
Sale Sharks host Leicester Tigers at 19:00 GMT on Saturday.
On Friday night, the PWR season got underway as Harlequins beat the Loughborough Lightning 52-48.
