With the transfer deadline approaching, how does the January window compare to previous years and what could happen before Monday’s deadline at 19:00 GMT?

Current Premier League spending stands at £325m, down from £421m in 2025 – but there is a good chance we could reach a similar final total with a busy final day expected.

January 2026 saw a fairly average window. Of the traditional Big Six clubs, only Manchester City and Tottenham were active, spending £84m and £48m respectively.

In fact, Antoine Semenyu’s £63m move from Bournemouth to City looks set to comfortably be the biggest deal of the window.

City will be the biggest spenders for a second January in a row, spending £188m 12 months ago on reinforcements that have had varying degrees of impact on the first team. The £84m spent on Semenyu and Mark Guehi is close to the £450m spent in the last 12-month period.

He is then followed by Tottenham (£47.8m) and West Ham (£47m), with the latter adding two strikers to their ranks as they look to climb out of the relegation zone.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea have so far chosen not to take part in this match, and this was the prevailing theme of that quartet last January; Arsenal and Liverpool have not signed anyone at all in the winter for three seasons now, while United’s signing of Patrick D’Orgu (£27m in 2025) has been their only action over the same period.

Chelsea signed Matisse Amojo (£13.5m) last January, otherwise they would have been reduced to relying solely on summer business as well.
