A Trent Alexander-Arnold mural has been vandalized as the Real Madrid right-back prepares to face former club Liverpool on Tuesday.
The Liverpool academy product was booed by some fans in May after he announced he would leave his hometown club when his contract expired in June.
The 27-year-old joined Real Madrid, who then earned an away tie with Liverpool in the league stage of this season’s Champions League.
The England defender’s mural was unveiled near Anfield after Liverpool became European champions in 2019, and was also vandalized earlier this year, with the word ‘rat’ scrawled across it.
The same word was written again several times on Tuesday, along with “adios el rata.”
White paint was also thrown over the image, but the graffiti was quickly washed off the mural.
On Monday, Alexander-Arnold was among a group of Real Madrid representatives who visited Diogo Jota’s memorial at Anfield and laid flowers in memory of his former Liverpool team-mate.
Speaking before Tuesday’s match, Alexander-Arnold said: “No matter how I am received, it is the fans’ decision.
“I will always love the club, I will always be a fan. I will always be grateful for the opportunities and things we achieved together – they will live with me forever.”
Alexander-Arnold won the Champions League, two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup during his time with Liverpool.
The club has been contacted for comment.
