📌 **What You’ll Learn**:
Caller ID company Truecaller has launched eSIM services for travellers. The launch comes as the company aims to strengthen its balance sheet and diversify the business amid declining advertising revenues.
The company said its plans will range from 1GB over 7 days to 20GB over 30 days. Initially, the launch will make the eSIM product available in 29 countries.
The list includes Italy, Sweden, Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Austria, Finland, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland, Norway, Chile, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria.
It is worth noting that the company’s largest market, India, is not on the list. This is likely due to the country’s strict telecommunications regulations. Previously, the country banned Airalo and Holafly over concerns about fraudulent use.
Truecaller said it is working with global cellular provider Telna and communications software provider Telness Tech to operate the eSIM platform.
With other eSIM providers like Airalo, Holafly, Roamless, and NordVPN’s Saily, Truecaller believes its existing user base of over 500 million users will be beneficial for acquiring new users.
“The starting point is different from other players in this category. They’ve had to build their audience from scratch. We offer a travel eSIM within our app that over 500 million people already use and trust every month,” Frederik Kjell, Truecaller’s COO, told TechCrunch via email.
“These are well-established relationships, with a large number of people using Truecaller for many years. This changes distribution and pricing,” Kjell said.
Kjell also said that this is a strategic move for Truecaller that makes the app more usable for users. This comes at a critical time for the company. Last week, the company cut 70 jobs across several teams. In addition, it posted disappointing numbers in the first quarter of 2026. Truecaller’s net sales fell by 27% to 362 million Swedish krona ($39.34 million), and advertising revenues fell by 44%.
The company is tipped to increase subscription revenue through features like AI Assistant and family protection. During times when advertising revenues are fragile, add-on services like eSIM can provide new ways to make money.
As TechCrunch reported last year, eSIM adoption is on the rise thanks to travel and device compatibility. Investors are also interested in investing money in eSIM-powered startups. In the past 12 months, startups like Airalo, Roamless, Kolet, eSIMo, and Truley have raised millions of dollars.
