Trump celebrates his 80th birthday with Iran deal ahead of UFC fights on the South Lawn of the White House

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump marked his 80th birthday on Sunday by praising a deal to end the war in Iran hours before a birthday celebration that previously seemed incomprehensible: a cage-fighting display on the South Lawn of the White House.

He had been promoting the budding deal for weeks, and the last-minute strikes in the feud had threatened to overshadow the extravaganza of UFC mixed martial arts — where fighters trapped inside a wire-mesh octagon attempt to punch, kick, chop and batter each other into submission.

An hour before the fighting began, the president said the agreement to end the conflict was “now complete” and announced that the United States would end its blockade of Iran and that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen, potentially easing rising oil prices and volatile global markets. But crucial details still have to be negotiated.

Word of the deal will allow the president to be especially cheerful as he exits the White House to engage in battles. He will be joined by Cabinet leaders, Republican lawmakers and more than 4,000 spectators screaming hoarse in a makeshift arena under “The Claw,” a spaceship-like metal arch outfitted with lighting, sound equipment and large screens. Thousands more will watch on big screens from the nearby Ellipse.

“This event is one unbelievable event,” UFC president Dana White, a close friend of the president, said during a Friday night hype session at the Lincoln Memorial as pairs of fighters jostled and brawled in front of the cameras under the stoic gaze of marble-like Honest Abe.

The president sought to link Sunday’s event — featuring seven battles that lasted after midnight — to larger, months-long celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

But it is geared more towards honoring himself, to the point that the G7 summit of leaders of industrialized countries was postponed so that the president could attend his own cage party and then fly directly to France for the meetings.

But the weather can put a big damper on things. Sunday night’s forecast called for a strong chance of thunderstorms and high winds after heavy rain and severe lightning disrupted Friday’s Lincoln Memorial event.

“I’m sick and tired of hearing about the weather,” White declared on Friday, before admitting that he would prefer future UFC events to be held only inside arenas.

A dramatic departure from the way the last president celebrated his 80th birthday

When Trump’s predecessor, President Joe Biden, turned 80 in November 2022, he celebrated with a private family brunch at the White House, revealing how much and how quickly things have changed.

Asked about the discrepancy, White House spokeswoman Allison Schuster said the fight “will be one of the most entertaining nights in American history” and said the timing was right. “Establishing this spectacle at the People’s House on Flag Day during our nation’s bicentennial is a fitting tribute,” Schuster said in a statement.

When he turned 80, Biden was the oldest president in US history, months away from launching a reelection bid that he would eventually abandon after a disastrous debate against Trump and a revolt among Democrats who worry he is too old for a second term.

Trump has now replaced Biden as the oldest person to be elected president of the United States. He is constitutionally barred from running again, but he always toyes with the idea publicly. This is despite polls showing growing public skepticism about Trump’s mental and physical health, suggesting concerns Biden faced as he turned 80.

An April Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll showed that less than half of US adults believe Trump has the mental acuity or physical health needed to serve effectively as president.

The White House responded with a lengthy statement from Trump’s former White House physician, Republican Representative Ronnie Jackson, saying, “Trump’s ability, focus, and strength are exceptional and appear every day. Claims to the contrary are pure fantasy.” Jackson added that polling concerns “are being promoted by the same biased, liberal, Trump-hating press that has completely ignored the absolute cognitive and physical disaster that has befallen President Biden.”

However, Trump has undergone four publicly announced physical exams during this period alone, with White House physician Dr. Sean Barbabella recently declaring that he is in “excellent health.”

“Bread and circuses” Trump style

The UFC event is an apt metaphor for Trump’s combative political style. He is as much a fan of the politics of the cage match style as he is of the cage fighting itself.

But Trump has also been a master of political disinformation, deliberately offering people something other than his presidency to focus on when things aren’t going well.

As the war in Iran continued ahead of Sunday’s announcement — even within weeks of Trump’s assurances that its end was near — gas prices rose dramatically. Renewed concerns about inflation and Trump’s declining job approval ratings helped ensure that a White House birthday party, unlike anything America has ever seen, would be a distraction.

“It’s all a distraction,” said Mike Fontaine, a professor of classics at Cornell University, who likened it to gladiatorial games in the Roman Empire, when combatants would brutalize each other for public entertainment aimed at boosting rulers’ popularity and quelling potential unrest.

“This is a classic strategy,” Fontaine said. “In ancient Rome, the phrase was ‘bread and circuses’.”

Trump says the UFC is paying for the event, and while its full costs have not been disclosed, the National Park Service said in a lawsuit that more than $60 million and tens of thousands of man-hours went into it, while seven government agencies “dedicated significant resources and manpower.”

The UFC also announced Friday that it will add an official World event partner Liberty Financial to create a special $250,000 athlete bonus pool for Sunday night’s winners. The cryptocurrency company is owned by the Trump family, which it founded with the president’s special diplomatic envoy Steve Witkoff and is run by his son, Zach. This arrangement blurs the lines between the Trump family’s financial interests and the events and construction projects that the president has prioritized and used government resources to accomplish.

However, Fontaine said that when it comes to personal taste for pomp, the president’s tendency during his second term to rely on “tough masculinity and brutal combat” combined the bloody sport of the UFC with Trump’s signature sense of humor and a constant sense of showmanship.

“President Trump has a once-in-a-generation talent for these things,” he said.
