Trump has been invited to deliver the State of the Union address to Congress on February 24

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Mike Johnson has invited President Donald Trump to deliver his first State of the Union address of his second term on February 24.

The invitation sent Wednesday notes that the nation is celebrating the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. The call touted the action of Trump and the Republican-led Congress in 2025 and pointed to next year.

“We look forward to advancing the important work that lies ahead in 2026, serving the American people, defending freedom, and preserving this grand experiment in self-government,” Johnson wrote.

The speech will give Trump the opportunity to craft the GOP’s message to voters ahead of the midterm elections that will determine whether Republicans maintain control of Congress, or whether Democrats can win one or both chambers and gain the ability to better counter Trump’s legislative agenda during his final two years in office.

Trump had addressed Congress once before during his second term, addressing a joint session in March.
