President Donald Trump once again cast his ballot by mail in Florida, where he continues to publicly criticize the voting method as a source of fraud and pushes Congress to curb the practice.

Palm Beach County voter records show the president voted by mail in Tuesday’s special election for state legislative seats and that his ballot has been counted. Early in-person voting in the contest continued until Sunday, when Trump was still at his home in South Florida.

The White House said Tuesday that Trump’s ire is directed at states that use universal mail-in voting, not individual cases of voters who need accommodations to vote by mail. The spokeswoman specifically rejected the idea that his voting practices conflicted with his push for new federal voting rules.

“As President Trump has said, the Save America Act includes commonsense exceptions for Americans to use mail-in ballots in cases of illness, disability, military service, or travel — but universal mail-in voting should not be allowed because it is highly vulnerable to fraud,” White House spokeswoman Olivia Wells said in a statement.

A Brookings Institution report published in 2025 found that instances of mail-in voting fraud occurred in just 0.000043% of all mail-in ballots, or about four cases out of every 10 million mail-in votes.

“As everyone knows, the president is based in Palm Beach and involved in Florida’s elections, but obviously he basically lives in the White House in Washington, D.C. That’s not a story,” Wells added.

However, last week, Trump called mail-in voting “fraud” and “extremely corrupt.” He is urging Congress to pass the Conservation Act. The sweeping bill would ban universal mail-in balloting and, as Wells noted, limit options to a select few voters such as people with disabilities, military commitments, or those traveling on Election Day. The measure faces sharp opposition in the closely divided Senate even with pressure from the president.

Trump has focused his attention on mail-in ballots since he began falsely claiming that his loss in the 2020 presidential election to Democrat Joe Biden was the result of fraud. Several US courts and Trump’s attorney general found no evidence of fraud affecting the outcome, even though the Covid-19 pandemic increased the share of voters who cast ballots by mail that year.

“We’re the only country in the world that does it this way. Very corrupt,” Trump said last week at the White House when he hosted Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin.

Dozens of countries, including European democracies that are traditional allies of the United States, use some form of mail-in voting.

Trump said last week that the SAVE Act is the “most important thing” pending in Washington, even as Congress and the administration grapple with the Iran war and the partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.

Last August, Trump used a White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to criticize mail-in voting.

“We’re going to start with an executive order written right now by the best lawyers in the country to end mail-in balloting because they’re corrupt,” Trump said. “And it’s time for Republicans to get tougher and stop this because Democrats want it. It’s the only way they can get elected.”

The president, who changed his official personal residence and voter registration from New York to Florida during his first term, does not have a standing application to vote by mail for all elections, according to county records. This means he must request a mail-in ballot for any individual election.

Today’s ballot includes Florida House District 87 and Senate District 14.

Trump offered his endorsement late Monday in the House contest via his Truth Social platform.

“There is a very important special election tomorrow, Tuesday, March 24, for Florida State House District 87 in beautiful Palm Beach County. … To all the great patriots in Florida State House District 87: Get out and vote for John Maples! Polls are open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM,” Trump wrote, without mentioning that he voted by mail or at all.

The Florida election comes a day after the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a Mississippi case questioning whether states can count mail-in ballots that were postmarked by Election Day but not received until later. Trump criticized those allowances in 14 states and the District of Columbia.
