WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order that would impose tariffs on any goods from countries that sell or provide oil to Cuba, a move that puts pressure on Mexico.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said this week that her government had at least temporarily halted oil shipments to Cuba, but said it was a “sovereign decision” that had not been made under pressure from the United States.

Trump is pressing Mexico to distance itself from the Cuban government and increasingly isolate the island, which is already subject to tough economic sanctions from the United States.

Following the US military operation to oust former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Trump said the Cuban government was ready to fall.

Trump threatens Canada to impose tariffs on aircraft via social media

On Thursday, Trump also threatened Canada to impose 50% tariffs on any aircraft sold in the United States, in the latest attack in his trade war with his northern neighbor as his dispute with Prime Minister Mark Carney widens.

Trump’s threat posted on social media came after he threatened over the weekend to impose 100% tariffs on goods imported from Canada if it went ahead with a planned trade deal with China. But Trump’s threat did not come with any details about when he would impose import taxes, as Canada has already concluded an agreement.

In the latest threat to Trump, the Republican president said he was retaliating against Canada for refusing to certify planes from Savannah, Georgia-based Gulfstream Aerospace.

Trump said that the United States, in return, would withdraw the license for all Canadian aircraft, including aircraft from the largest aircraft manufacturer, Bombardier. “If for any reason this situation is not immediately corrected, I will impose a 50% tariff on Canada on any and all aircraft sold to the United States of America,” Trump said in his post.

Spokespeople for Bombardier and Canada’s transportation minister did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment Thursday evening.
