Screenplay by David Mamet. Score by Ennio Morricone. Wardrobe from Giorgio Armani. If you can forgive Sean Connery’s Irish accent (by way of Edinburgh), this 1987 crime drama is a stylish joint. Brian De Palma’s dark true story of how Prohibition-era mafia boss Al Capone – a chilling Robert De Niro – was brought to life in a book featuring Kevin Costner as Treasury agent Elliot Ness. He assembles a group of honest officers, including Connery’s wise old cop, to take down Chicago’s No. 1 wrongdoing, while corrupt forces attack him. Simon Wardle

’71, 1.15am, Channel 4

With the 2013 prison drama Starred Up and this thriller a year later, Jack O’Connell fully realized the star potential he suggested in films like Skins. He plays Gary, a British soldier posted to Belfast in 1971, who, after a raid on his home goes wrong, finds himself alone on the run from IRA gunmen in a city he doesn’t know – in a political situation he can barely understand. Despite being a tense, tight story set over the course of a day and a night, Yann Demange’s film packs a punch with a surprising amount of nuance, as the desperate Gary encounters folk from across the Troubles spectrum.
