Two weeks in August

9.15pm, BBC One

The middle-class vacation from hell continues and the repercussions of Dan and Jess’ indiscretion become clear. Zoe (the wonderful Jessica Raine) feels liberated and determined to let her hair down; A fancy gods and monsters party at the home of apocalyptic expats Flick and James seems like the perfect opportunity. But things spiral out of control in all sorts of amusing and horrific ways. Great fun. Phil Harrison

1966 World Cup Final: in colours

Zero years of hurt… 1966 World Cup Final: in color on Channel 4. Photo: Keystone/Getty Images

An evocative throwback to a time of absolutely zero mischief to get us in the mood for the World Cup. The game has been carefully color-coded for a full re-examination, complete with the Russian assistant referee challenging VAR. Spoiler alert: everything went well for once. pH

Celebrity Bridge of Lies

5.35pm, BBC One

An Olympian raises the level of competitiveness on Ross Kemp’s rocky Truth or Lie Bridge this week. Former track and field athlete and London 2012 gold medalist Greg Rutherford is trying to cross paths with children’s TV legend Janet Ellis, Scottish actor and comedian Sanjeev Kohli and former EastEnders star Louisa Lytton. Holly Richardson

6.20pm, BBC One

Chris McCausland was in splits throughout his latest appearance on the word-laden quiz show, especially after he got the ‘guide dog’ answer wrong. He returns for another shot with fellow celebrities Emmett J. Scanlan, Melvin Odom, Sue Perkins, Grace Dent and Vanessa Williams. Human resources

8.25pm, BBC One

Clinical Commander Flynn is convinced that young soldiers are being violently harassed by the same cruel colonel he clashed with during his days as an Army medic. Mr. Speed

9pm – Yo & Drama

This tense, violent thriller, starring Clive Owen as an angry, retiring but still beleaguered Sam Spade, concludes with a double bill. We think back to France’s involvement in Algeria in some context as MI6 contacted Spade about the activities of the child codebreaker Zedd. pH

Nice blurb… Bouncers is on Disney+. Image: © 2025 Disney/Pixar

“We’re all in this together.” It might seem like an obvious environmental message to put pressure on kids who will flock to see Pixar’s latest animated film. But when it’s as charmingly executed as it is in Daniel Chong’s comedic sci-fi adventure, you’ll be hard-pressed not to root for the endangered animals in the film. Mabel (voiced by Piper Korda) is our teenage human guide to a biologically diverse corner of the woods and waters near Beaverton. But when a proposed highway scatters the wildlife, she mentally “jumps” into a robotic beaver (invented by her biology teacher) so she can track them down and save their space. It’s a nice blurb full of neat gags, relatable villains, and a shark killer named Diane. Simon Wardle

The Curse of Frankenstein, 9.05pm, Talking Picture TV

The first in a distinguished series of colorful “Hammer Horrors,” Terence Fisher’s 1957 adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel still packs a punch. Unable to replicate Boris Karloff’s pathos-ridden appearance, the filmmakers crafted a creature with a pale, dank grey, with irredeemably violent tendencies. He doesn’t even appear halfway through, but thankfully Peter Cushing – in his first major film starring role – dominates the screen as the arrogant Baron Frankenstein, a nerd who happily dives off the moral deep end. Vermiglio, 9.20pm, BBC Four

The simple, traditional life of an Italian mountain community confronts the frictions exposed by World War II in Moura Delpiero’s sensitive and beautiful drama. Tommaso Ragno has the annoying white mustache of the local teacher and father of eight, Cesare. He is harboring two army deserters: his nephew and Sicilian boy friend Pietro (Giuseppe Di Domenico). But then his eldest daughter Lucia (Martina Skrenzi) falls in love with Pietro, upsetting the balance of family power and putting patriarchal and gender norms on the brink of collapse. Southwest
