A transformative (not least in terms of soaring) performance by Ethan Hawke carries Richard Linklater’s melancholy drama, which imagines one night in the life of failed, alcoholic Broadway poet Lorenz Hart. Attend the opening of Oklahoma! — the musical created by his former partner Richard Rodgers (Andrew Scott) with Oscar Hammerstein II — Hart sneaks into a bar before an after-party to drown his sorrows in a cocktail of regret and unrequited love. Pixar’s resident metaphysical sage, Pete Docter, has created – along with co-director and writer Kemp Powers – another fantastical treatment tinged with sadness. Music teacher and pianist Joe (voiced by Jamie Foxx) hopes to work as a jazz musician but dies prematurely. On his quest to return to Earth, he finds himself in a world of unborn souls and meets the rebel 22 (Tina Fey), who doesn’t want to have a life at all. Accessible on many levels, it is at once a fantasy comedy adventure for kids about finding your way back home and a lesson for adults in making the most of what you’ve got. Southwest
