British-Nigerian visual artist Yinka Shonibare – who placed Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle in Trafalgar Square in 2010 – has proven himself to be a wry, frank and deeply thoughtful chronicler of his life. It is particularly moving to hear how the impact of the spinal virus he contracted while a student in London has shaped his outlook and creativity over the past forty-five years. JV
