The Thin Red Line (Terrence Malick, 1998), 9pm, Great! an act

“A radiant, exhilarating experience”… Sean Penn, centre, in The Thin Red Line. Photo: Cinetext/20 Century Fox/Allstar

After 20 years of absence, Terrence Malick’s return to filmmaking has sparked great excitement. Fortunately, his loose 1998 adaptation of James Jones’ World War II novel is a brilliant, exhilarating experience. The sparse advance of an American infantry battalion up a hill defended by Japanese forces on the Pacific island of Guadalcanal is interspersed with the soldiers’ existential musings — hopes, fears, memories — that speak to the loss of innocence on the battlefield. The ridiculously stacked cast includes Jim Caviezel, Sean Penn, Elias Koteas, and Ben Chaplin. Simon Wardle
