Depicting the brainwashing of American soldiers in Korea in the early 1950s, John Frankenheimer’s brilliant film makes its central mystery not what happened to war hero Lawrence Harvey Shaw, but why. Frank Sinatra plays his commanding officer Marco, whose recurring nightmares hold the key to a communist plot against America. Steeped in the Cold War paranoia that seems to project its main characters into the cold sweat, it’s also a slyly Oedipal tale, with Shaw’s mother (Angela Lansbury) determined to involve her son in his senator’s stepfather’s rise to power.
