surgeon
9pm on Channel 5
Not for the faint of heart, this new series follows the lives of working surgeons, starting with bowel cancer specialist Darren Francis. His first patient was retired nurse Doris, who had worked in the NHS for 50 years, and had been suffering from severe abdominal pain for two weeks. In addition to performing a sensitive and risky procedure, Francis invites cameras into his home and talks candidly about what it’s like to tell someone they have cancer. Holly Richardson

Alice Roberts: Our Hospital Through Time
8pm on Channel 5
The broadcaster appears to be trying for the title of TV’s busiest professor, taking a break from touring Roman ruins on Channel 4 and hunting for the Holy Grail on Sky History to give a glimpse into St Barts Hospital in London. First, she heads to its archives to hear how one of the most valuable artefacts is a scroll from 1137. Alexey Duggins
Landscape Artist of 2026

“I will not say that everything will go as planned. Quite the contrary.” In the final preliminary phase, eight artists had just four hours to paint Dover Castle, Henry II’s medieval fortress, which has been described as a “12th-century ornamental version”. Styles range from bright neon mixed media to pyrography and watercolor. Ali Catterall

An Unwoven World with John Simpson
At 11pm on BBC Two
One of the last bastions of quality BBC news journalism continues its unheralded but appreciated work in this ongoing series. As world affairs editor, John Simpson recently noted that he has never faced a more worrying year than 2025. Given his reporting on Iran and Greenland, it’s hard to imagine him feeling reassured about 2026 just yet. pH

Shadow of a Doubt (Alfred Hitchcock, 1943), 11 AM, Movie 4
This is a connoisseur’s choice of Hitchcock films, and the master of suspense himself has chosen it, on multiple occasions, as his favorite. The story follows Charlotte “Charlie” Newton (Teresa Wright), a teenage girl living in the idyllic small town of Santa Rosa, California, safe but boring until her charismatic relative (Joseph Cotten) comes to stay. Uncle Charlie is cheerful and generous, and takes a special interest in his young niece. He seems like the perfect guest actually. Except for all this screaming about “rich widows.” Ellen E. Jones
