With his brilliant new film Sirât now in cinemas, here’s a chance to see Oliver Lax’s earlier work. Set in the mountains of Galicia, Spain, the film is a low-key drama that follows Amador (Amador Arias Mon), who has been released from prison after being convicted of arson, and who returns home with his mother Benedicta (Benedicta Sánchez) and three cows. As a study of the seasonal rhythms of rural life, it is both hypnotic and soothing, as the taciturn Amador herdes livestock and interacts strangely with other locals.
