Bennett’s other sister
Sunday, 8pm, on BBC One
“To be poor and handsome is unfortunate enough, but to be penniless and simple is a difficult fate indeed.” While the current Austen craze runs the risk of causing burnout (this is one of three major new dramas tied to the author’s 250th anniversary), here’s a sparkling reimagining of Pride and Prejudice told from the point of view of the hard-working but neglectful Sister Mary. Based on Janice Hadlow’s novel of the same name, Mary (Ella Broccoleri) falls in love with an optician whom her mother (a very laconic Ruth Jones) considers too lowly for the Bennet family. Will Mary find joy away from her sisters? And the courage to find herself? Cue her journey to becoming an “intellectual.” Holly Richardson

At the end of last week’s opening of this visceral, terrifying thriller, Rachel Carey (Holliday Grainger) believed the man she had just seen shooting the Home Secretary was standing in front of her – but will anyone believe her? Did I make a mistake in that? Human resources

And to further trick us as we try to guess whether Michael (David Morrissey), the prime suspect and husband of the deceased, is actually guilty, the feverish crime drama introduces a second, unhelpful and arrogant middle-aged man who may have done just that. Then convenient security cameras and some inexplicable supporting character behavior keep things interesting. Jack Seale

The Martian, at 10 pm, on BBC Two
Although Ridley Scott’s output has been very successful in recent decades, his 2015 sci-fi film is up there with his best work. The always entertaining Matt Damon is astronaut Mark, stranded alone on Mars after a failed NASA mission. He has four years to be rescued, but he does not have enough resources to survive. the solution? “I’m going to have to figure the shit out of this.” In essence, this is a procedural space, where Mark’s technical issues provide all the drama it needs. Son, 11pm, Channel 4
The final play in Florian Zeller’s trilogy of plays (After Mother and Father) gets the screen treatment. It is a clearer look at family conflict than the previous two works, although the emotional turmoil is just as intense. Hugh Jackman plays Peter – the father of teenager Nicholas (Zane McGrath), who is divorced from Kate, played by Laura Dern, and is now married to Beth (Vanessa Kirby) and has a new child. Nicholas is showing signs of depression so Peter allows him to come stay. But, as one doctor says, “Love isn’t enough” and Peter – who suffers from a fractured relationship with his father – doesn’t have the tools to deal with a mental health crisis. Southwest
