McCartney: Searching for the Lost Bass
8.45pm, BBC2
He bought his Höfner bass (“about £30!”) in 1961 during the Beatles’ formative years. But the instrument that had become synonymous with Paul McCartney disappeared around the time the Beatles split up and went on a journey of their own. With contributions from several “Bass Detectives” (and from Macca himself), this documentary about the search for the machine is another angle to a well-told story. Phil Harrison
Suitable ladies
7.45pm, BBC 3
This new season of the BBC’s Comedy Shorts initiative effectively acts as a series of pilots, allowing new talent to get some welcome exposure. The film opens with “Suitable Ladies,” based on the play “Dugsy Days” by Sabrina Ali, a gentle but specific coming-of-age story about four Muslim girls stuck in detention at school. We expect to see some of tomorrow’s stars. pH
Celebrity sabotage
8pm on ITV1
Six civilians have signed up for the Military Endurance Series hosted by former soldier Jason Fox. But this is all fake. The real show involves our usual team of celebrities – joined by guest spoiler Guz Khan – trying to secretly bring the whole thing out of a nearby hideout. As ridiculous as it sounds. Graeme Virtue
Hidden assets
9.35pm, BBC 4
The third season of the euro-hopping procedural around Ireland’s Criminal Assets Bureau concludes with a double bill. In Bilbao, DS Wallace and her Basque counterpart Beitia are aggressively seeking to link the KYV carrier to a human trafficking case. Will ninja-level forensic accounting help them catch a break? JV
Jonathan Ross Show
10pm on ITV1
With his delightful turn on The Minor Prophets, Michael Palin graces us with one of the most profound television pleasures of 2026. He joins Jonathan Ross to discuss these late-career highlights. Comedian Catherine Tate and actress Anna Maxwell Martin will also engage in light banter. pH
Saturday Night Live UK
10pm, Sky One
Tina Fey promoted a problematic skincare brand, Jamie Dornan rapped about Irish pubs, and Riz Ahmed played unnervingly hilarious pop music in his dressing room. So, what’s in store for fourth host Jack Whitehall when he takes over the final episode before a week-long hiatus, alongside musical guest Jorja Smith? Lucinda Everett
Movie choices
The result, now, is Apple TV
Movies in which movie stars bemoan their fate can be pretty exhausting (see Jay Kelly), but this comedy from director, writer, and co-star Jonah Hill features the acting skill of that beacon of kindness, Keanu Reeves. As Reeve Hawke, a famous actor and secretly recovering heroin addict, Reeves elicits immediate sympathy when he is blackmailed via a compromising video. This prompts him to go on an apology tour to people who hate him to find the culprit, including his first manager (a major shift from Martin Scorsese), his ex-girlfriend and even his mother. Turns out he’s not a nice guy… Simon Wardle
Caught Stealing, 10.05am, 11.15pm, premieres on Sky Cinema
In addition to referring to theft, the title of Darren Aronofsky’s Insane Offense refers to a runner in baseball trying to advance before the start of play. The coincidence here is New York bartender Hank (Austin Butler, believable despite the plot’s many twists), who is left holding a cat and a mysterious key by his neighbor, wayward London villain Ross (a ridiculous but strangely endearing cameo by Matt Smith). But violent criminals of every color (Russians, a Puerto Rican, and two Orthodox Jews) are after what this key unlocks. Southwest
Our Man in Havana, 4.35pm, Talking Pictures TV
Set in 1959 Cuba “before the last revolution,” Carol Reed’s comedy-drama is a light touch of the deception and self-importance of the world of espionage. Adapted by Graham Greene from his own novel, it stars Alec Guinness, who plays the amused and confused English vacuum cleaner salesman James, whose idle life with his itinerant daughter is shaken up when Noel Coward’s British agent recruits him. James decides to invent a network of informants and intelligence, but can he continue his deception? Southwest
