Our Girls: Southport Families

8pm, BBC One
“We sent her there as a reward,” says Elsie’s mother Dot Stancomb, recalling the day in July 2024 when her daughter went to a Taylor Swift-themed dance class and didn’t come home. This documentary sees the families of the three murdered children (the other two being Alice da Silva Aguiar and Baby King) remembering their daughters as they were in life rather than dwelling on the unimaginable cruelty of their deaths. The sadness is overwhelming. Phil Harrison

A Very British Christmas: Castle Howard

8pm on Channel 4
At the stately Yorkshire home – star of the 2008 film Brideshead Revisited – preparations for the festive season continue all year. This sweet documentary sees designers Charlotte Lloyd Webber and Adrian Lilly decking the halls using the Emerald City of Oz for inspiration. Hannah J. Davis

What is the purpose of the monarchy?

9pm, BBC One
King Charles is the first billionaire to assume the throne. However, the monarchy is currently costing taxpayers more than ever before. The second episode of David Dimbleby’s series asks whether it is possible to square that circle. He was joined by austerity expert George Osborne as he questioned whether we were getting enough bang for our buck royally. pH

Tommy: Good. The bad. Anger

9pm, BBC Three
Cameras have been following Love Island graduate Fury over the past year as he tries to refocus on his mental health, relationships and boxing career. The closing double bill has him preparing for a grueling 100km triathlon in France while also nervously anticipating the series’ premiere. Graeme Virtue

The most dangerous roads in the world

9.45pm, BBC2
There are two South African comedians heading inland and off-road, and while rainbow-haired Rhea Lena is certainly up for the challenge, her companion Darren Harriott seems less prepared. As they began their 500-mile journey in a relatively posh Cape Town car park, a realization came to him: “Being off WiFi usually means no WiFi… Oh my….” Ellen E. Jones

All the king’s men (Robert Rossen, 1949), 4.30pm, Movie 4
Irony emanates from Robert Rossen’s compelling drama as it traces the rise of Broderick Crawford’s Willie Stark from honest small-town lawyer to demagogue ruler. John Ireland’s disaffected journalist Jack Borden is our guide to the ways in which power can corrupt those who have it – and also those like him who come into its orbit. Crawford is great, plotting his character’s transformation from dull but serious to charismatic and bullying, a diminutive Citizen Kane who sees the ends justify the means. Simon Wardle

Easy Riders… Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea in Ride the High Country. Photo: Everett/Shutterstock

“Ride the High Country” (Sam Peckinpah, 1962), 2.05pm, 5 action
Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott, both veterans of Hollywood Westerns, demonstrate the benefits of familiarity with the genre in Sam Peckinpah’s satisfying 1962 adventure. They play former partners who reunite, along with a naive cowboy, to move gold from mine to bank. There is an easy charm to their relationship as they reminisce and hit on each other on their way to the mountain camp. However, with motives not as clear as they initially seem, there is room for brawling and shooting, as young and old must choose between right and wrong. Southwest
