Christian Friedel – unrecognizable from his role in The White Lotus – plays Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz who lived with his wife (Sandra Höller) and children in an idyllic country house adjacent to the notorious concentration camp. For the Hoss family, domestic life goes on as usual, while the screams of industrial-scale murder are often audible over the garden wall. Jonathan Glazer’s film is an engrossing historical drama, but it also offers a chilling commentary on our current moment, and humanity’s ability to persist in a time when genocide is occurring.
