Dog Day Afternoon (Sidney Lumet, 1975), 10.55am, Sky Cinema Greats
In 1975, Al Pacino reunited with his Godfather co-star John Cazale in Sidney Lumet’s fact-based crime drama. But their characters here are not Corleone; Sonny and Sal are amateur armed robbers holding up a Brooklyn bank (to get money for a sex-change operation for Sonny’s lover) but become trapped in a hostage situation. Most of the time, it’s just an adventure, as the bank’s employees become preoccupied with Sonny’s plans and take advantage of the media circus and excessive police operations that arise around the siege.
