Gunfighter, 2.50pm, great! an act

Jimmy Ringo is the fastest gun in the American Southwest in the 1880s. But with notoriety comes risk because – as aging sniper Gregory Peck discovers – there’s a “squirt” in every town he seeks to challenge. Henry King’s tense 1950 Western is about how the weight of legend can drag a man down — but a weary Ringo hopes to avoid that when he rides to Cayenne seeking to rekindle his relationship with teacher Peggy (Helen Westcott) and their young son. However, like all good Greek tragedies, the more he tries to escape his fate the closer he gets to it. Simon Wardle

Cool Hand Luke, 5:50pm, Sky Cinema Greats

“Adorably drenched in sweat”… Cool Hand Luke on Sky Cinema Greats. Photography: Cinema/International

There are obvious Christ-like overtones in the titular chain gang convict in director Stuart Rosenberg’s brilliant, sweat-soaked, grime-soaked drama. Lucas Jackson (Paul Newman), an individual in a system that does not tolerate difference, is a charismatic newcomer who wins over his fellow inmates by his ability to endure beatings, escape attempts, and eat hard-boiled eggs (a scene worth watching in the movie on its own). Newman shines with star quality as we witness the prison mythos being created. Southwest

A Few Good Men, 10.35pm, Channel 4

If you want to pay homage to the late Rob Reiner, you could do worse than his 1992 legal thriller. Aside from the sharp edges and cynicism of Aaron Sorkin’s screenplay, there’s a joy to be had in watching Hollywood’s new and old guards in close combat. Tom Cruise plays a cocky young Navy lawyer who teams up with colleague Demi Moore in defending two Guantanamo Bay Marines accused of murder. Unspoken military rules and illusions of honor hinder their cause, with Jack Nicholson’s domineering base commander the great monster they must defeat. Southwest
