Adapted from the play by Peter Shaffer by Joe Barton, this breathless romp depicts an 18th-century Viennese court as a place of intrigue, power plays and debauchery. Soon, Salieri’s feverish jealousy toward “this hateful creature” leads him down a dark path. Great fun. Phil Harrison

Choose a movie
Oppenheimer, 9pm, BBC Two
Although it seemed like a left-wing choice at the time, it wasn’t actually that big of a shift for Christopher Nolan from the physics-defying plots and tortured heroes of films like Inception to a biopic of the scientist who brought us the atomic bomb. This is the man (played with magnetic intensity by Cillian Murphy) who changed the reality of all of humanity with his devastating weapon, and then the truth haunted him for the rest of his life.
