Tottenham say they are backing Destiny Udogie after it was confirmed the Italian defender was threatened with a gun by a football agent.
BBC Sport reported on Monday that an unnamed English Premier League footballer was targeted in London on September 6.
It is also alleged that another man was blackmailed and threatened by the same person during the incident in question. No injuries were reported.
The Metropolitan Police, which is investigating the matter, said a 31-year-old man was arrested on September 8 on suspicion of possession of firearms with intent, blackmail and driving without a licence. He has been released on bail while investigations continue.
Tottenham said in a statement on Tuesday: “We have provided support to Destiny and his family since the incident and will continue to do so. As this is a legal matter, we cannot comment further.”
The 22-year-old Udoji joined Tottenham from Udinese for £15m on a five-year deal in the summer of 2022, before immediately returning to the Serie A club on a season-long loan.
He returned to Tottenham at the start of the 2023-24 season and made 76 appearances for the club.
The Italian has played 10 games this season, including a 4-0 win over Copenhagen on Tuesday night in the Champions League league stage.
