If one prop scoring a brilliant try is enough to raise questions from the front row union, doing so in a pair of colorful boots is certainly grounds for a write-off.
However, Ulster’s Angus Bell was keen to stress that neither his double-cross nor a fashion statement was pre-planned.
With County picking up a good seven points against Cardiff on Saturday evening, the Wallabies collected the ball on the edge of their 22 and beat players with speed and power.
Cam Winnett got in his way, but the prop brought the Cardiff full-back to the ground with a side step that any world-class winger would be proud of, followed by another to beat winger Euan Lloyd as he raced to score.
It was an incredible effort from any player, regardless of the striker in the front row, albeit an Australian international with a history of bringing a bit of the ‘x factor’.
There was more drama to come as Ulster beat the Welsh side 21-14, but Bale’s try was undoubtedly the highlight.
It was so good, in fact, that Marcus Rea stood in the Ulster back row with his hands on his head after witnessing the run, while Bale was flanked by his team-mates.
“I’ve been lucky. When your boot breaks in the warm-up, you have to manage,” a humble Bale told Premier Sports.
“I have different colors at the moment so I have to fix that. It wasn’t planned.
“I’d like to say I know what I’m doing but I don’t really. I don’t really remember it, but it was fun.”
