Manny Lumsden took five wickets as England booked their place in the semi-finals of the Under-19 Men’s World Cup by 65 points over New Zealand.

Hampshire seamer Lumsden bowled superbly on a slow pitch at Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo to finish with impressive figures of 5-17 as the Kiwis were bowled out for 169 in pursuit of 235.

England will play Australia or Afghanistan in the semi-finals on February 3 or 4 depending on India’s performance in their final group match in the Super Six stage against Pakistan.

India currently sit in second place with six points but have a superior net run rate (+3.337) compared to England (+1.757), with group leaders facing Afghanistan and runners-up playing Australia.

England captain Thomas Riou said, “It’s nice to win and know that we qualified. We are now looking forward to the semi-finals.”

“Mane has been good throughout the tournament. He bowled fast and was aggressive, and to have firepower like that is a great asset.”

England compiled a patient 234-7 after the New Zealanders asked to bat first on a tricky surface.

Ben Dawkins made 42 as he and fellow opener Joseph Morris scored 48 for the first wicket to give England a strong platform.

Dawkins then shared a stand for the same amount with tournament top-scorer Ben Mayes, who top-scored for England with 53 off 70 balls.

Caleb Falconer (47) and Farhan Ahmed (29) provided some late momentum as Snehith Reddy took 2-28 for the Blackcaps.

Lumsden caused England an early loss with the ball when he removed the dangerous Hugo Pugh and Kiwi captain Tom Jones in the eighth minute.

Reddy provided some resistance with 47 off 65 balls, while Jaskaran Sandhu scored 26 balls before Lumsden’s third wicket.

Lumsden returned two balls later to seal the victory, bowling Harry Burns and Hunter Shore with back-to-back deliveries.

“It’s a great score and I’m really proud of the way we stuck to the bat. We knew 230 or 240 would be a good score,” Rio added.

“It was a tough wicket and very inconsistent, and then the way our seamers bowled it was amazing.”
