A UPS The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky around 5:15 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

UPS said in a statement that three crew members were on board the plane. The company said: “At this time, we have not confirmed any injuries or casualties.”

The cause of the accident was not immediately known. The plane was an MD-11F, a type of cargo plane manufactured by aircraft manufacturer McDonnell Douglas, which merged with Boeing in 1997.

A large plume of black smoke was seen near the airport, and local television footage showed flames and debris in a large radius around the crash site.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane was en route to Honolulu and that it and the National Transportation Safety Board would investigate the accident.

The airport said in a statement on the X website that the airport was closed following the incident, and “all incoming and outgoing flights from the Syrian Democratic Forces were temporarily suspended.”

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said the “situation is serious” on Channel X and that he was headed to Louisville.

The airport is home to UPS Worldport, which the company says is the largest package handling facility in the world. Hundreds of UPS flights depart daily from Louisville, according to the company.
