With Pechey making clear that he was not willing to sacrifice his role as a television commentator for full-time coaching, Raducano continued to weigh her options.

Attention was drawn to Roig’s availability over the summer and the pair worked together on a secret trial after Wimbledon.

Raducanu loves to learn, and she once attributed her high instructor turnover rate to asking “provocative” questions. I found Roig’s sessions stimulating, challenging and immediately encouraging.

“Francis is very passionate about tennis,” Villaro said.

“The amazing thing is that he can watch a game on TV and not care about the score – he checks how they move, how they position themselves, how they hit the ball. He watches so many specific things.

“When we started the academy he said, ‘I want to do this but I don’t want any papers. “I just want to be on the field.” The field is his passion.

Raducanu has already impressed Roig with her work ethic.

In their first tournament at the helm, the pair conducted multiple daily practices at the Cincinnati Open, where she confidently beat Serbia’s Olga Danilović before – most notably – pushing world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to her limits.

While Raducanu did not come as a shock, it was a promising performance at the US Open.

“I spoke to Francis after Raducano beat Danilović and before she played Sabalenka,” Villaro said.

He said: “It’s amazing, I love working with this player so much because she loves being on the court. We spent two hours practicing the response, the comeback as well as the second shot and what to do when the opponent attacks.”

“He enjoyed it very much. The most important thing for him is having a player who loves being on the field – and that seems to be the case.”
