England’s Matt Fitzpatrick recovered from his painful failure at the Players Championship to win the Valspar Championship,
Fitzpatrick had led last week’s players by one shot on the 17th tee, but a well-placed putt cost him as American Cameron Young closed the gap to seal the win.
But Fitzpatrick got redemption on Sunday in Palm Harbor, Florida, hitting a 14-foot putt to putt on the 18th hole and beating American David Lipsky by one shot.
The 31-year-old carded a three-under par score of 68 to finish at 11 under par and had to wait for two groups to complete their rounds before confirming his third PGA Tour win.
“The important thing is I felt like I was playing well,” said Fitzpatrick, who last won on Tour in 2023. “Going into this week, I wanted to continue that and I felt like I had the confidence in myself to do that.”
“Doing that for four innings was special this week.”
Fellow Englishman Jordan Smith, 33, finished third at nine under – his best finish on the PGA Tour.
His compatriot Marco Peng, South Korea’s Sungjae Im, who led for three rounds, and American Xander Schauffele are all tied for fourth at eight under.
