VAR: The technology will be used for the first time in the BetMcLean Cup Final

The Northern Ireland Football League has confirmed that the upcoming BetMcLean Cup final between Linfield and Glentoran will see the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the first time in domestic football in Northern Ireland.

The deciding match between Belfast rivals Linfield and Glentoran will be played at Windsor Park on Sunday 15 March at 15:00 GMT.

“This achievement represents an important step forward for domestic football, bringing the league closer to European competition standards,” a statement issued by the National Football Association on Friday said.

“Although VAR will not replace the authority or judgment of the on-field referee, it will serve as a technological support mechanism aimed at enhancing the accuracy of decision-making, fairness and transparency in key match events.

“The match will be officiated by Irish Football Association match referees on the pitch. However, VAR operations for this match will be managed by experienced referees from outside Northern Ireland using the Hawk-Eye system, as used in FIFA and UEFA competitions, ensuring technical competence during this preliminary phase.”

The statement explained that the cup final “will provide an ideal monitoring environment to evaluate operational procedures, communication protocols and the comprehensive integration of VAR technology within the framework of local matchdays.”

The experience gained is set to inform any future decisions the governing body will make regarding the potential wider implementation of VAR across NIFL competitions.

Gerard Lawlor, chief executive of the NFL, admitted that the decision would not attract support from all quarters, but highlighted the benefits of using technology.

“The introduction of VAR to this match represents an important step forward for our league, enhancing decision-making and support for our match officials,” he said.

“However, we recognize that this will not be a universally popular decision and that the implementation of any new technology requires scrutiny and adjustment.

“This game represents a valuable opportunity for us to evaluate and learn about the technology in a controlled environment, while providing practical benefits to both the refereeing team and our clubs, especially those involved in European competitions where its use may be required.”

Irish FA Head of Refereeing Andrew Davie added: “The use of VAR in the BetMcLean Cup Final is an exciting step forward for both the league and refereeing in Northern Ireland.

“Introducing this technology for such an important match underscores our ongoing efforts to support referees with the highest standards of refereeing tools available.”
