Major European leagues have been called to meet with UEFA in the summer to discuss how to use video assistant referee (VAR) technology.
A summit of chief referees from the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 will discuss how to readjust VAR to its intended interpretation of only intervening on the clearest of errors.
Roberto Rossetti – UEFA’s chief referee – called the meeting after saying last month that the match should not “go in this direction of VAR’s microscopic interventions”.
UEFA wants to discuss with leagues how VAR will be used and the limits applied.
“I think we’ve forgotten why VAR is in place,” Rossetti said.
“With objective decisions, it’s great. As for interpretations, subjective evaluation is more difficult.
“That’s why we started talking about clear, obvious errors — clear evidence.”
VAR is run very differently across Europe.
The Premier League has its lowest VAR interference rate this season – 0.275 per game – although that does not mean less controversy over decisions.
Figures released last month showed that the Bundesliga and La Liga were next in line at 0.38 tackles per game, followed by the Italian League at 0.44 and the French League at 0.47.
In the Champions League, tackles average 0.45 per match.
Rossetti also wants all leagues to speak “just one technical language” after controversy over inconsistent application of laws such as in handball.
It is hoped the meeting will lead to a more global approach to the laws and how VAR is used.
