Jannik Sinner fought back from a set down to claim his fourth title of the season by defeating Alexander Zverev in the Vienna Open final.
The top seed, who is currently on a 21-game winning streak on indoor hard courts, suffered a hamstring cramp early on. To win 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in less than two and a half hours.
It is Sinner’s second title this month, after winning the China Open at the start of October, while he also added to his Grand Slam tally with victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon earlier in the year.
“It feels great,” Sinner said after lifting his 22nd Tour-level title. “It was a tough start for me. I tried to stay there mentally, trying to give my best when it was necessary.
“It’s been a special week. It’s always a highlight on my calendar to come and play here in Vienna.”
Sunday’s final was the first meeting between the duo since Sinner defeated Zverev in straight sets in the Melbourne final last January.
It seemed that Zverev, the 2021 Vienna Open champion, would have a strong foothold in the final, after he had a double break advantage and the score was 4-1 in the first set. From there, the German only needed to hold serve to take the first set 6-3 in 46 minutes.
But Sinner continued to work hard and looked fresh in the second set, facing a number of successful strikes, holding serve twice and breaking his serve, and taking a 3-0 lead.
The rest of the second set was relatively straightforward for the world number two, but he and Zverev battled it out in the decider, before Sinner broke at 5-5.
From there, he opened up three championship points before Zverev slotted a simple backhand winner into the net.
World number three Zverev said: “I would like to congratulate Jannik Sinner, whose performance has been off the charts over the past two years.”
“For me, he is currently the best player in the world. This week, he was simply the best player in Vienna.”
Earlier, Britons Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool won their seventh tour title this season with a 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Austrian Lucas Midler and Portuguese Francisco Cabral.
The British needed only 70 minutes to achieve their first title since winning the Canadian Open on August 7.
