Manchester United goalkeeper Fallon Tullis-Joys said it was “shameful but not surprising” that football was still plagued by racism.

UEFA has launched an official investigation following Vinicius Junior’s allegation of racism against Benfica midfielder Gianluca Pristiani during Real Madrid’s Champions League match in Lisbon.

Vinicius said, “Racists are cowards,” while Pristiani denied directing racist abuse at the Brazilian striker.

Tullis-Joys knows from personal experience how deep the problem is, and the USA international is saddened that racism is still a part of football.

“I am the daughter of a black woman, so I juxtapose the black woman’s experience in society,” she said.

“It’s not surprising to me. I think it’s very shameful that situations like this continue to happen.

“I recently met United’s ‘All Red All Equal’ campaign, so, I know we are on our doorstep looking inward at what we are doing as a club.

“This is where I think we can really look at what we’re doing locally at United and then continue to expand through social media or our content and make sure people know that it’s simply not OK. Period. Full stop. This is not OK.”
