Pereira returned to management just over three months after being sacked by Wolves, who at the time had picked up just two points after 10 games.
He regrets not stepping down before the start of the season, initially frustrated by what he saw as the club moving too slowly to secure signings, and then unhappy with the players they were given.
He still signed all signings, paying particularly for winger Jon Arias, who was sold to Palmeiras earlier this month, but felt he never got his first options.
There are similarities with Nuno’s exit from Forest, with both being disappointed with the transfer deal, but there should be no surprises or secrets between Pereira and Marinakis.
Pereira worked under Malik Forest at Olympiacos in 2015. The relationship only lasted six months, but they achieved a domestic double.
He left Olympiakos for Fenerbahce, who Forest visit in the Europa League on Thursday, in the summer of 2015 – but reflects that was a mistake when he was moving between clubs wanting to reach the Premier League.
One of his main tasks at Forest is to manage and understand the owner.
He said, “He is ambitious. He wants to win. He is emotional. I know him well.”
“I remember the energy and the fire we created. In Greece, there is a fire inside – they love to see energy. He asked me to be myself. He liked the way we won the league and the cup when we worked together.
“It was midway through the season and we created a good relationship. He trusts my work, and I trust his personality. I think we need passion as well.”
Marinakis had hoped Daiichi would bring stability, but failed to beat a pricey assembled Forest team.
Despite averaging nearly 1.5 points per game during his tenure, players were concerned about his coaching methods and focus on athleticism and running.
Players were polled following the defeat to Leeds earlier this month, and a number of them were called in to see Marinakis after the 0-0 draw against Wolves on Wednesday.
Pereira has already spoken to his team about the need for teamwork.
“If you buy into the idea, it’s a good move,” he said. “If you don’t buy the idea of the manager, that’s a big problem, and you should also buy the character.
“If you buy into the idea and the person, have an open mind to receive information and work hard together, it is possible to achieve what we want.
“Football is more than just tactical stuff. It’s about connecting with people who do it specifically – to fight for a goal with commitment.
“It’s about connecting the fans to the team, the club and the city, to create energy for everyone to believe in themselves, to create a good environment for work, and of course tactical ideas.
“I can’t change much because in a short time it would be wrong [to try] But with clear ideas and good communication we can do it.”
