The Crown Dependencies have a unique position in the structure of the British Isles – the King is the head of state, but they have their own governments and are not part of the United Kingdom.

Jersey’s attempts to join UEFA were thwarted in 2018, and the islands are viewed as county-level football associations within the FA structure.

For many years, a player born on Channel Island could be eligible to play in any of the four local nations because they were British, but not specifically English, Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish.

In practice, this rule has been used very rarely – Guernsey’s Ryan Zico Black and Chris Tardif won youth internationals for Northern Ireland at the turn of the millennium.

Osmond is the first to recently use the rules to qualify at youth level for Wales.

All of the Channel Islands’ internationals – Jersey’s Graeme Le Saux and Maja and Guernsey’s Matt Le Tissier – have gone on to play for England, seen as the natural place to play on the islands that face just north across the Channel to play football.

Currently, Bournemouth’s guernsey midfielder Alex Scott looks the closest to being the next Islander to earn a cap, having been part of the victorious England squad at the Under-21 European Championship this summer.
