“There’s no doubt,” joked Nigel Davies after seeing his team snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Scarlets have not beaten Ulster in a competitive match since November 2018, and until the 82nd minute the result looked to be heading in the same direction.
But through Sam Costello’s stunning sweeping pass and Ellis Mee’s 50-metre dash to the line, Scarlets fans finally had something to celebrate.
If there’s any team that needs a win this weekend, it’s the Scarlets who are pinned to the bottom of the URC table.
“He’s been fantastic,” said Davies, who took over as interim director of rugby earlier this month.
“We asked these guys to be fearless and relentless in their performance, and that’s what they did.”
The former member of the Wales coaching staff admitted that the second half was particularly difficult.
“We couldn’t get out of our 22 for 30 minutes, but the players were champions defensively, which kept us in the game and gave us a chance at the end.
“We will be humbled by this result, there is a long way to go and a lot to do, but I was at a loss for words because the values we spoke about came through so strongly.
“It makes us all proud.”
The only impact on the Scarlets’ win was an injury concern to full-back Blair Murray, who came off in the second half with Davies unsure of the nature of the injury.
“I don’t think it was too serious but he was struggling so we needed to make that change,” Davies said.
Murray is due to join the Wales squad for the Six Nations on Monday and will be assessed.
