✅ Key idea:
Carey has not played for his country since 2023 and was previously ineligible under the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) selection policy because he has 20 caps, five fewer than the number required for those playing for clubs outside Wales.
But there are holes, as demonstrated when Wales selected Jarrod Evans in the Six Nations earlier this year.
Harlequins played fewer than 25 caps, but did not receive a reasonable offer to stay with former club Cardiff.
The same appears to be true for Carey, who left Cardiff last year to join Saracens for a second time.
Carey could have been available for other countries in 2026 as it has been three years since he previously played for Wales.
Tandy says that situation didn’t contribute to his decision to call up the prop and he can put his faith in Curry, which means naming Nicky Smith to the bench.
“What is clear is his [Carre’s] “His ability all over the pitch, his attacking presence, his stamina and his pace for a big man,” Wales assistant coach Danny Wilson said.
“He’s joined them now, in the Premier League, his development is in prime time, where he’s been tested.
“He’s been a breath of fresh air since he’s been in camp. He’s been great to work with and I’m looking forward to seeing how he goes through this season.”
Carré is in line to pack in the front row alongside Ospreys hooker Dewi Leake and Cardiff forward Kieron Assiraty.
Adam Bird and David Jenkins are expected to return in the second row after missing the summer tour in Japan.
After helping the British and Irish Lions win the series against Australia, Wales captain Jack Morgan is set to come into the back row alongside Cardiff’s Alex Mann and Dragons’ number eight Aaron Wainwright.
The likes of Gloucester lock Freddie Thomas and Scarlets number eight Tyne Plumtree could provide impetus from the bench.
