Walmart On Tuesday, it said it had struck a deal with OpenAI to allow shoppers to make faster purchases directly through its AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT.
With this move, the retail giant and the largest grocery store in the United States is trying to keep pace with changes in how consumers discover the goods they buy. Beyond purchasing items they see on social media or products recommended by retailers, shoppers are increasingly turning to ChatGPT or similar AI-powered chatbots for gift ideas or help finding the best deals.
“For many years now, e-commerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a press release. “That’s about to change.”
The AI feature will be “multimedia, personal and contextual,” he said, adding that Walmart is “moving toward a more fun and convenient future.”
The company did not say when shoppers will be able to start purchasing Walmart items on ChatGPT.
In late September, OpenAI first announced an Instant Checkout feature that will soon allow shoppers to purchase items through Walmart, and said it would initially support single-item purchases from Etsy sellers. OpenAI said at the time that more than 1 million Shopify merchants, including Skims and Glossier, would be available soon.
The instant payment feature is a new source of money making for OpenAI. Walmart did not disclose any financial terms of the deal, but OpenAI previously said it would charge companies fees for transactions completed through ChatGPT.
Along with the OpenAI deal, Walmart has an AI-powered shopping assistant in its app called Sparky.
