Chinese long jump world champion Wang Jiannan has been cleared of doping after a review of CCTV footage at hospital.
Wang (29 years old) became the first Asian to win the long jump gold in the world with his jump of 8.36 meters in Oregon in 2022.
He failed an out-of-competition doping test in November 2024, which showed traces of terbutaline, a drug used primarily to treat and prevent breathing problems in asthma patients.
The Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (Xinada) said the presence of the drug was due to passive inhalation while Wang was accompanying a relative to the hospital for treatment using a nebulizer.
Chinada decided that Wang bears no fault or negligence for the violation and will not be banned.
The decision was reviewed by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), which used hospital security footage and patient records to investigate Wang’s movements before his drug test.
The IU investigation sought the opinion of an independent scientific expert, which concluded that “passive transfer of the substance to the athlete cannot be ruled out.”
The Integrity Unit also said there was “nothing suspicious” about the documents and CCTV files shared by Chinada.
