Wire provided further evidence that they are capable of challenging for top honors this season as Sneyd provided impressive kicking lessons and had the defensive resilience to hold out when Trinity came good.
Wakefield had won the previous three meetings of those two meetings, but they soon ran into trouble as Snead scored a penalty and then video referee Chris Kendall overturned a ‘no try’ on-field ruling to give Sibley four points.
A few minutes later, Hopoate backed up Danny Walker’s break to go wide for another try at 14-0.
Wyre appeared to have made a costly mistake as they responded to Wakefield’s aggressive pressing at the end of the first half by repeatedly fouling Sibley and Jewett kicking the resulting penalty to give his side a foothold.
That became a steadier platform early in the second half as Trinity took advantage of the extra man, with Truman sending a brilliant pass over the top for Jowett to score in the corner.
Sipley’s first action upon returning to the court was to break down the offense which led to Trueman making a better cut pass and Myers finishing cutting the deficit to just four points.
That sparked Wire into action after a drop in tempo and Snead’s boots took control as he fed Smith, playing first-class rugby for the first time, to score his first try, which Snead converted and then added a penalty to give his side breathing room.
Pratt then collected a brilliant kick from Jack Sinfield to head home into the corner and when Jewett brilliantly converted the difficult conversion, the game was back in the balance.
Wakefield looked certain to score when Myers crossed for a corner, but 20-year-old full-back Kai Taylor Wray, who had stunned the crowd with his attacking prowess against St Helens, made a brilliant tackle to put them in contact and hold the lead.
Snead dropped a goal and then curled another precise kick into the corner for Smith to catch and pass in the air for King to remove any doubt.
