Watch: “Are you stupid?” Trump declines a reporter’s question about examining resettlement in Afghanistan

President Donald Trump called a journalist “stupid” for trying to fact-check his claim that the Biden administration did not vet Afghan nationals who came to the United States, in connection with the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington.

After Trump claimed Thursday that Afghans fleeing the Taliban were never vetted under a Biden-era program, CBS News White House correspondent Nancy Cordes provided additional reporting and asked a follow-up question.

“for you [Department of Justice Inspector General] “We just reported this year that there was a thorough vetting by the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI of those Afghans who were brought into the United States,” Cordes said, questioning why Trump was blaming the Biden administration.

“Because they let them in,” Trump said. “Are you stupid? Are you a stupid person?”

“They came on a plane with thousands of other people who shouldn’t be here, and you’re just asking questions because you’re a stupid person,” Trump said.

Rahmanullah Lakkanwal, the suspect accused of shooting two members of the West Virginia National Guard in Washington, D.C., worked with the CIA in Afghanistan and entered the United States as part of Operation Welcoming Allies.

One of the victims, specialist Sarah Beckstrom, died Thursday after the shooting. Sgt. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said Friday that Andrew Wolf remained in critical condition. The charges against Lakhanwal were upgraded to first-degree murder on Friday.
