House Speaker Mike Johnson downplayed the possibility of President Donald Trump seeking a third term for the White House on Tuesday, citing established constitutional limits on presidential term limits.

While the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution prohibits anyone from being elected president more than twice, Trump and his former White House adviser Steve Bannon have floated the idea in recent weeks that he might seek a third term.

“It’s been a great tour, but I think the president knows — and he and I have talked — about the limitations of the Constitution, as much as a lot of the American people regret it,” Johnson, Republican of Los Angeles, told reporters at the Capitol.

Johnson said that the United States has “three exceptional years” ahead of the Trump administration. But he estimated it would take about 10 years to amend the Constitution, which would require the proposed amendment to be approved by a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress and ratified by three-quarters of the states. States can also ask Congress to call a Constitutional Convention to consider a potential amendment, but this process has never occurred in U.S. history.

He added that Trump “is having a good time with that, attacking Democrats who have their hair on fire over this possibility.”
