WATCH: Jack Smith explains why Trump was the only defendant charged in the January 6 case

Rep. Brad Knott, R-R., questioned former special counsel Jack Smith on Thursday in a hearing focused on Smith’s investigations into President Donald Trump’s mishandling of classified documents and his role in the Jan. 6 attack.

Knott said only one defendant — Trump — was the target of the indictment in the Jan. 6 case, although six co-conspirators were identified in the document.

Smith said his team believed there was evidence to charge other people, saying he “was in the process of making that decision when our work was done.”

The prosecutor then said it was true that Trump was the only defendant named in that case because, “in my judgment, he was the person most responsible for the crimes charged against him.”

When Knott reiterated that Smith had only charged one person, Smith said the decision was “consistent with the principles of federal prosecution, which emphasize the degree of someone’s guilt in making a charging decision,” and Trump was that person.

The hearing is an opportunity for the prosecutor to provide his inside view on the investigations, which have led to unprecedented indictments. They were thwarted once it became clear that Trump would return to the Oval Office; Justice Department policy prohibits the prosecution of a sitting president.

Republicans and the president accused Smith of pursuing a politically motivated case against the president. Trump denied any wrongdoing while attacking Smith, calling him a “criminal” who should be investigated and “put in prison.”

Smith defended his investigations in an hours-long closed-door meeting with lawmakers in December, saying he said he had “proof beyond a reasonable doubt” of what his investigations revealed. He denied accusations of bias.
