Watch: Jeffries says: Congress must approve any potential US military action against Iran

The country’s Democratic leader said on Wednesday that President Donald Trump must obtain congressional approval before any US action against Iran.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he “will not ignore anything in front of this president” when asked about possible US military action toward Iran.

But he insisted that Trump could not act alone in conducting military operations.

“It is clear that the American people believe that before any negative military action by Donald Trump and the Republicans, Congress must of course – consistent with our constitutional responsibility – approve any acts of war,” Jeffries said.

Democrats demand ICE reforms on fifth day of DHS shutdown

Jeffries said that without “dramatic, bold and meaningful” reforms to ICE, funding for the Homeland Security bill will not move forward.

Jeffries said Trump and Republicans need to “own the mess they’ve created” with the massive tax breaks and spending cuts bill that sent about $75 billion to ICE.

He watches: Levitt says the Democratic counterproposal on DHS funding is “not very serious.”

Democrats are making a number of demands, including that immigration agents identify themselves by wearing body cameras and removing their masks.

They also want agents to seek warrants before entering private property, and are pushing for a ban on immigration enforcement around sensitive sites, including schools, hospitals, houses of worship and polling places.

He added that these remain “lines in the sand” in negotiations with the administration.

Over the weekend, Democrats sent the White House their final offer. Jefferies said they are awaiting a response.
