WATCH: Kennedy presses top military officials for ‘direct conversation’ about ramifications if US leaves Iran now

Sen. John Kennedy, R-Los Angeles, pressed top military officials at a hearing Tuesday before the Senate Appropriations Committee.

The senator acknowledged that some of his colleagues want the United States to stop its military operations against Iran and bring service members home. He wondered what would happen in this scenario.

Gen. Dan Kaine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, did not directly answer the question, saying that the senator was raising a hypothesis and that it was a political calculation.

Kennedy asked the general whether Iran would “impose tariffs” on the Strait of Hormuz. When Kaine said it was a hypothetical question, adding that he didn’t know what the outcome would be, Kennedy said: “It’s as serious as four heart attacks and a stroke.”

When Kaine objected again, prompting Kennedy to say, he then turned to Hegseth, who also did not satisfy the senator’s desire for “straight talk.”

Kennedy asked Hegseth whether Iran would come together to build its nuclear capabilities if the United States halted operations. When Hegseth did not answer his question directly, the senator said: “We need direct answers.”

Hegseth, Kaine and Agriculture Secretary Brock Rollins testified Tuesday before the Senate Appropriations Committee about the Trump administration’s $87.6 billion additional funding request, the bulk of which will be used in the U.S. war with Iran.

Their appearance before lawmakers in the Senate comes after the United States launched its tenth consecutive night of strikes against Iran. At least three US service members have been killed in recent days. As the war between the two countries intensifies, the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, forcing US gas prices to jump again.
