Levitt spoke to reporters moments after Trump told Truth Social that he intends to meet with Putin in Budapest to try to resolve the war between Russia and Ukraine, but the date has not yet been set.

Trump’s announcement comes one day before his scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office on Friday.

Trump also said Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other advisers will meet with their Russian counterparts next week. The site was still being prepared.

Discussing the call, Levitt said Putin congratulated Trump on the ceasefire agreement in the Middle East, and Trump expressed hope that his success there would help in negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

Trump said they also talked about trade between Russia and the United States when the war in Ukraine ends.
