✅ Here’s what you’ll learn:

Starting Tuesday, the U.S. Capitol will display a statue of teenager Barbara Rose Jones protesting poor conditions at her segregated high school in Virginia, an obvious replacement for the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that was removed several years ago.

Jones’ statue will be unveiled at 3 p.m. ET. Watch in the player above.

The unveiling ceremony for the statue representing Virginia will be held in the Capitol building in Emancipation Hall, with the participation of Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Republican Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and the Virginia congressional delegation.

Jones was 16 years old in 1951 when she led a student strike for equal education at R.R. Moton High School in Farmville, Virginia. The students’ case was supported by NAACP attorneys, who filed a lawsuit that would become one of five cases reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education. A landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision declared “separate but equal” public schools unconstitutional.

Jones later married Reverend William Powell and became Barbara Rose Jones Powell, raised five children and was a librarian in the Philadelphia public schools. She died at the age of 56 in 1991.

A model of the statue showed the young Jones standing beside the podium, holding a tattered book above her head. Inscribed on its base are the words: “Are we just going to accept these terms, or are we going to do something about it?” It also contains a quote from the Book of Isaiah: “And a little boy led them.”

In a statement Monday, Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia said the Bible verse reminded him of John’s courage and leadership.

“I am thrilled that millions of visitors to the U.S. Capitol, including many young people, will now walk past her statue and learn about her story,” Keane said. “May you continue to inspire generations to stand up for equality and justice.”

The statue replaces a statue of Lee that was removed in December 2020 from the Capitol, where he represented Virginia for 111 years. The removal took place during a period of renewed national interest in Confederate monuments following the death of George Floyd and was moved to the Virginia Museum of History and Culture.

Jones’ piece is part of the National Statuary Hall collection at the Capitol, where each state can contribute two statues. The other statue representing Virginia is of George Washington.

The National Statuary Hall displays 35 statues. Others are located in the Crypt, the Hypostyle Hall, and the Capitol Visitor Center.

Former Democratic Virginia Governor Ralph Northam had requested the removal of the Lee statue. In December 2020, a government commission recommended replacing the Lee statue with a statue of John.

The statue of John, sculpted by Stephen Weitzman of Maryland, received final approval from the Architect of the Capitol and the Joint Library Committee in July.

Johns also appears in a sculpture at the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial outside the state Capitol in Richmond.
