The crackdown on immigrants in Minnesota, which led to mass arrests, protests and two deaths, is coming to an end, border official Tom Homan said Thursday.

The Senate Homeland Security Committee is holding a hearing Thursday for Minnesota state officials, as well as leaders of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection at 9 a.m. EST. “As a result of our efforts here, Minnesota is now less of a haven for criminals,” Homan said at a news conference.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement launched Operation Metro Surge on December 1.

Federal authorities say the sweeps focused on Minneapolis-St. The Metro Paul area led to the arrests of more than 4,000 people. While the Trump administration described those detained as “illegal aliens and dangerous criminals,” several people without criminal records, including children and U.S. citizens, were also detained.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said it was highly unusual for the state to be excluded from investigations into shootings as happened in the wake of the killings of two Americans.

Ellison will appear at a Senate hearing to consider enforcement of immigration laws in the state.

Democratic Sen. Gary Peters of Michigan asked him what kind of cooperation the state had with the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice on investigations into the deaths of Renee Judd and Alex Peretti.

“We haven’t had any collaboration yet which is really unusual,” Ellison said.

Peters also asked if the federal government was obstructing the state and Ellison agreed.
