US President Donald Trump will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for talks at the White House on Friday. The US president indicates he is not ready to agree to the sale of a long-range missile system to Kiev, which the Ukrainians say they desperately need.

This is the fourth meeting between Zelensky and Trump in their quest to resolve the Russian war in Ukraine. Trump spoke separately on Thursday by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin and plans to meet with him in about two weeks in Budapest, Hungary.

In recent days, Trump has shown openness to selling long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, even as Putin has warned against it. After Thursday’s call with Putin, Trump appeared to downplay the chances of Ukraine obtaining the missiles.

Mark Montgomery, an analyst at the hardline Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington, said that although such a sale would be a shocking move, it could take years to provide Ukraine with the equipment and training needed to use Tomahawk missiles.

Montgomery said Ukraine could be better served in the near term by increasing the number of Extended Range Assault Munitions (ERAM) missiles and the Army’s Tactical Missile System, known as ATACMS. The United States already agreed to sell up to 3,350 ERAM units to Kiev earlier this year.

The Tomahawk missile, with a range of about 995 miles (1,600 kilometers), would allow Ukraine to strike much deeper into Russian territory than ERAM (about 285 miles, or 460 kilometers) or ATACMS (about 186 miles, or 300 kilometers).

The Ukrainian president doesn’t just come to the White House looking for military aid. He also has a business pitch for Trump that revolves around fossil fuels.

Ukrainian officials have indicated that Zelensky is looking to offer to store US LNG at Ukrainian gas storage facilities, which would allow a US presence in the European energy market.

Zelensky reviewed the strategy on Thursday in meetings with Energy Secretary Chris Wright and the heads of US energy companies. Zelensky posted photos of the meeting on X and said it was important to restore Ukraine’s energy infrastructure after the Russian attacks and expand “the presence of American companies in Ukraine.”
